AN INDESCRIBABLE FEELING
Every night after work, Garnett Pedro walks by his old homethe Pier at the Seattle Aquarium. He doesn’t ever want to forget the place where he slept for two years. His visits serve as a stark reminder of where he still could be.
Tragically, homelessness was all too familiar for this courageous Plymouth Place tenant. Growing up in an abusive home, Garnett found himself on and off the streets for much of his life, despite efforts to break the cycle. Even after graduation from a culinary training program, a skinny part time job paycheck was not enough to keep him in housing.
“Emotional stress became a dominant force in my life,” Garnett says of his time on the streets.
But his tough past never killed his spirit. Quite oppositely, Garnett’s will remains stronger than ever.
After being referred to Plymouth Housing Group’s Rental Office, he waited to get an apartment for 14 months. When the call came he was overjoyed beyond description.
“How I feltit’s an indescribable feelinglike someone dropped $1 million into my lap! To have a home, my own shower, my own place to cookit’s a blessing.”
Garnett puts his gratitude into action by focusing his energy on helping others. When he’s not working hard at his job cleaning the public restrooms in Pioneer Square, he volunteers his time as a cook for the Street Ministry. Every weekend he prepares fresh, hot meals that are free to all.
And to those in need of housing, Garnett recommends Plymouth Housing Group in a heartbeat.
“Plymouth Housing Group meets my demands and needs. It’s a great start to anybody’s journey to independent living. The staff is very flexible, very open & helpful. They’re good people here.”
Garnett is grateful for the fresh and calming new life Plymouth has helped to provide.
“I know there’s a purpose for me, and for my life. I accept my past, and I’m working now to find my place, and my future. Here, I have peace.”
